The very first verse of the Bible states:
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” Gen. 1:1.
In previous articles, we have seen conclusively that there is no logic in believing in a globe with a vacuum around it. But the Word of God tells us that for something to be acceptable and trustworthy, there need to be two witnesses.
The initial state of the earth
We are going to continue our study with verse 2 of the same chapter. It reads:
“And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” Gen. 1:2.
Looking at the initial state of our home, we learn that it was void and without form. From these words, it is plain that just after the earth was created it was not yet suitable for life. There was no vegetation on it, no animals, no humans, no dwelling places so that anyone would be able to place his head and find shelter in this uninhabited area. In its initial form, the earth could not support the existence of even one creature.
Darkness was upon the earth
Verse 2 gives us another detail about the conditions that existed at the beginning. We learn that the earth was covered with darkness. This is a very interesting detail.
According to the heliocentric teaching, the earth circles around the sun and it lightens the earth. And evolutionists believe that the beginning of everything is the Big Bang. According to that theory, after the explosion of one dot in which all the universe was gathered, the particles that started flying around led to the formation of galaxies, systems, planets, and satellites. One of those particles was the origin of the Solar System, where the star that we call “sun” became the center around which the earth and some other bodies without light of their own (called “planets”) started circling.
This theory has been accepted by both believers and unbelievers. It sounds unbelievable but this is the norm nowadays, because those who believe in God and His Word are convinced that the earth circles around the sun, and this can be true only with the Big Bang theory.
No heavenly body to lighten the earth
The Bible tells us that the earth is immovable (1 Chronicles 16:30; Psalm 93:1; Psalm 104:5). Verse 2 confirms the stationary model. It says: “Darkness was upon the face of the deep.”
If the earth was circling around the sun, even from the first moment of its existence it would have been lighted by the star that is the center of the Solar System.
But the verse does not imply that the source of light and warmth has temporarily stopped shining. In fact, the sun did not exist when the Earth was created. Therefore, the earth did not move – it neither moved in a circle nor moved in a straight line. It was created in a way that was similar to the making of any object or device that is made at the respective spot of production.
And the darkness (or the absence of a lighting body) is enough evidence that God did not create a Solar System, nor made the earth orbit around some point. It would be a strange inconsistency on the part of the builder to first make a static planet and then create the object that it is to circle about.
The face of the waters
The verse gives us another detail, but this time it gives us information about the Author of all things. It says that “the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters”.
We are told about the “face” of the waters. Can there be any “face” on a ball? A “face” represents a level surface – a plain. Therefore, the very description of the initial state of the earth disproves the globe theory – from the very first few verses of the Bible!
In Isaiah 45 we are told:
“Thus saith the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker, Ask me of things to come concerning my sons, and concerning the work of my hands command ye me. I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded.” Isa. 45:11, 12.
The heavens – a creative work of God
To reconcile the Scriptures, so that they can fit modern science, falsely so-called, the world has come in conflict with all the true principles of interpretation and so they have robbed the Scriptures of their true meaning. As he speaks about the glory of the heavens, the psalmist says:
“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork… In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun, which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race. His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.” Psalms 19:1-6.
Have the inspired Scriptures used words to communicate messages to mortal men that are different than theirs, and (moreover) formulated deceptively? We cannot believe this.
The (so-called) science of today teaches that it is the earth that moves and not the sun. Then why are we not able to do this with those verses of the Word that describe the glory of heaven?
Since the Word of God tells us that God made the earth with His own hands and that he stretched the heavens (which are something tangible, material, physical, and not just air), shall we continue trusting in what the world believes, being led by the space agencies and by pastors who misconstrue the Word of God?
“But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye.” Acts 4:19.
Inevitable conclusions
We can only say, with full assurance and having the Word of God to sustain us, that:
1) There is a foundation beneath us.
“Who laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be removed for ever.” Psalm 104:5.
2) The Heaven of Heavens is above us.
“The waters are hid as with a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.” Job 38:30
“Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? declare if thou knowest it all.” Job 38:18.
“He hath compassed the waters with bounds, until the day and night come to an end.” Job 26:10.
There is no ambiguity here, no evading the inevitable conclusions, if we honestly consider these verses with reverence to the Word of God.
